Rideshare drivers and the coverage gap
Personal auto policies usually exclude rideshare driving. Here is where the gaps are.
Most personal auto policies exclude coverage while you are using your car to carry passengers or deliveries for pay. Rideshare companies provide some coverage, but it depends on which "period" you are in.
The three periods
| Period | Status | Typical coverage |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | App off | Your personal policy |
| 1 | App on, waiting for a request | Limited liability from the rideshare company; often no physical damage coverage |
| 2–3 | En route to pickup / passenger in car | Higher limits from the rideshare company, often with a large deductible |
The gap
Period 1 is the usual problem: your personal policy may exclude it, and the rideshare company's coverage there is limited. Damage to your own car may not be covered at all.
How to close it
Many insurers offer a rideshare endorsement that extends your personal coverage into Period 1 and sometimes helps with the deductible in later periods. Tell your insurer you drive for a rideshare or delivery platform; failing to disclose it can lead to denied claims.
