How to read your auto policy declarations page
The one-page summary that tells you exactly what you are paying for.
The declarations page ("dec page") is the summary at the front of your auto policy. It is the single most useful document for comparing quotes, because it lists exactly what you have today.
What you will find
| Section | What to check |
|---|---|
| Named insured and drivers | Everyone who drives regularly is listed or formally excluded. |
| Policy period | Start and end dates, and whether the term is six or twelve months. |
| Vehicles | Year, make, model, VIN and garaging address for each vehicle. |
| Coverages and limits | Liability limits, uninsured motorist, medical/PIP, collision and comprehensive. |
| Deductibles | Separate amounts for collision and comprehensive. |
| Premium by coverage | What each coverage costs, per vehicle. |
| Discounts | Which discounts are applied. |
| Lienholders | Your lender or leasing company, if any. |
Using it to compare
Request quotes using the same limits and deductibles. The per-coverage premiums also show where your money goes; for an older car, a large collision premium may be worth re-examining.
Can't find it? Most insurers post the current declarations page in their app or online account, or will email it on request.
