Rental reimbursement and roadside assistance: worth it?
Two inexpensive add-ons, and how to tell if you need them.
Rental reimbursement and roadside assistance are optional add-ons that often cost a few dollars a month each. Whether they are worth it depends on what you already have.
Rental reimbursement
Pays for a rental car while yours is being repaired after a covered claim, up to a daily limit (for example $30 or $40 a day) and a maximum per claim. It applies only when the repair is covered under your policy, usually collision or comprehensive.
- Worth considering if you have no second car and rely on driving daily.
- Check that the daily limit matches rental prices in your area.
Roadside assistance
Covers towing, jump-starts, lockouts, flat-tire changes and fuel delivery, subject to limits.
- You may already have it through a new-car warranty, a credit card or an auto club membership.
- Some insurers count roadside calls as claims activity; ask how they are treated.
When comparing quotes, note whether each quote includes these add-ons so you don't compare a basic quote against one with extras.
